Snowy Morning

We travel a lot during shoulder season, which outside of the sunbelt is spring and fall. This means at most state parks, we miss out on a lot of what many state parks have to offer. Some amenities are closed, and there usually aren’t any events or programs to be enjoyed. That’s a bit of a bummer, but it’s made up for by how empty the parks are on the weekdays (and sometimes weekends). It can be really nice nearly having the park to ourselves.

One of my favorite things to do (I know, I have a lot of favorite things) is to walk the empty campground loops. They’re usually not completely empty, but close to it. Some, especially non-electric sites, might be empty, even closed to camping, but one can easily find places where you can look around in all directions and not see any people or vehicles. I love it. It’s almost like walking around in some truly abandoned ghost town or being in one of those movies where all the people are gone.

Today was like that at Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. To get here, we drove through ever-worsening weather conditions. By the time we got here, the front of our motorcoach was covered in snow, with only the wiper’s path clear of snow. The last two or so hours of our drive were not fun, but this morning more than made up for it. The whole campground area is covered in a beautiful coating of snow. I can’t wait to explore the trails later today and tomorrow!
