Catching up

Barnie waits while I take photos of the sunrise over Milford Lake.

It’s been a busy few days, here’s an update. We’re in Kansas. The last couple of days we’ve been at Milford State Park, sort of near Manhattan and Abeline. This is a really nice park. Barnie and I got to get some hiking in, and LeeAnn and I took a short bike ride. The weather could have been better, the highs for the two full days we were here hit 90°F, and sustained winds of over 20mph, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying being outside. We found possibly the only campsite on this loop with shade trees, so the temp wasn’t a problem.

LeeAnn enjoys Rays’ Opening Day game in the shade while a strong wind is blocked by the motorcoach.

This campground, Eagle Ridge, is designed for equestrian use. It has several shelters for keeping horses, and a horse wash station. We’ve never stayed in an equestrian-use campground, normally you need a horse for that, but it didn’t matter here. There were two other sets of campers here, and zero horses. We did take advantage of the horse wash station to give Barnie a much needed (he’d say unwanted) bath.

Barnie rests in the shade at our campsite. A horse corral is in the background.

This park is near Fort Riley, which was one of the home bases for two Buffalo Soldiers Regiments in the mid to late 19th century. There’s a nice memorial to them in Junction City, a small town just a few minutes from the park.

Before Kansas, we spent a couple days in Sedalia, Missouri, visiting family. We didn’t get to visit long, but we enjoyed the time we had there.

Before that we were in Indiana, southwest of Indianapolis. It was a nice park, but there’s not too much to say about it, other than we were about a 20 min. drive away from Indiana’s tallest waterfall, Cataract Falls. At about 20 feet, it’s a good looking waterfall and worth the visit if you’re in the area.
